Walk highlights -
Edge Hill Escarpment – follow the dramatic ridge around 700ft / 215m above sea level, with extensive views across the Warwickshire countryside. Edge Hill forms the north-eastern extremity of the Cotswolds.
Panoramic battlefield views – look out across the Vale of the Red Horse and the landscape where the armies of King and Parliament confronted one another. On a particularly clear day, views can extend as far as the Malvern Hills, around 40 miles away.
Autumn woodland – late October should make the wooded Edge Hill ridge one of the highlights, with ancient woodland, fallen leaves and occasional openings revealing the countryside below.
Beautiful historic villages of Radway, Ratley and Horton.
Big skies & open countryside – a lovely mixture of high ridge walking, fields, old lanes, woodland and quintessential English countryside.
⚔️ The Battle of Edgehill — 23 October 1642
The Battle of Edgehill was fought on 23 October 1642 and was the first major pitched battle of the English Civil War. King Charles I's Royalist army descended from Edge Hill to confront the Parliamentarian army commanded by the Earl of Essex on the plain below. The fighting was fierce but ultimately indecisive.
One of the best moments of our walk will be standing on the Edge Hill escarpment looking down towards Radway and the battlefield. The steepness of the hillside also gives you an appreciation of the terrain the Royalist infantry had to descend before going into battle; the Battlefield Trust specifically highlights how striking that descent is when experienced on foot.
And there's a nice atmospheric extra for an October walk: local folklore around Edge Hill is full of ghosts. The National Trust even notes a tradition of a Roundhead ghost associated with the area around the Castle Inn/Ratley route.
This is an Autumn walk across several fields, check weather before hand and wear appropriate clothing, bring layers and plenty of snacks, food, water to sustain you.
