Highlights include -
Historic Abingdon-on-Thames – starting in one of England's ancient market towns, with the Thames, Abingdon Bridge and the old Abbey area providing a cracking start.
Culham Lock & Culham Cut – the route follows this peaceful navigable section before returning to the natural river.
Proper rural Thames – long stretches of open meadows, farmland and quiet riverbank. This is one of those sections where the Thames feels much more secluded.
Clifton Lock – another classic Thames lock before reaching one of the prettiest villages of the day.
Clifton Hampden – beautiful riverside village with its distinctive brick bridge, thatched cottages and church overlooking the Thames.
The Barley Mow – historic thatched riverside pub at Clifton Hampden, also associated with Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat.
Wittenham Clumps – the distinctive twin hills rise above the Thames around Little Wittenham and make a great backdrop as we approach Day's Lock.
Day's Lock – particularly famous for its association with the World Poohsticks Championships, which began here in the 1980s.
Views towards Dorchester-on-Thames – including the tower of historic Dorchester Abbey across the landscape.
Shillingford – attractive Thames-side village and bridge before another peaceful riverside section towards Benson.
Benson Lock & Weir – the route crosses the river here before the final stretch towards Wallingford. The walkway over the weir reopened in 2026 following a closure of more than three years.
Wallingford – a brilliant historic finish. The town has Saxon origins and the remains of Wallingford Castle, once one of the country's important medieval royal strongholds
* Did you know?* - Wallingford castle became particularly important during The Anarchy, the 12th-century civil war between King Stephen and Empress Matilda. The castle was later slighted after the English Civil War.
