Join us on a midwinter journey through one of the most atmospheric prehistoric landscapes on the Shropshire–Welsh border. Starting at Mitchell’s Fold, we'll explore the ancient Stone Circle before climbing onto Stapeley Hill, then head south into Wales to discover Roundton Hillfort and climb the imposing Corndon Hill. Around 9 miles of wild border country, combining Bronze Age ritual sites, Iron Age history, folklore and spectacular winter views — a fitting walk to mark the shortest days of the year and the turning of the seasons.

Tickets for this event cost £15.00. This payment is non-refundable. It will only be refunded in the event of a non-weather related cancellation. *Tickets/spaces for this walk/event are pre booked and pre paid, please don't just turn up on the day with cash*

Highlights include -

Mitchell’s Fold Stone Circle – Built more than 3,000 years ago during the Bronze Age, probably with around 30 stones, of which about 15 remain. The stones were brought from nearby Stapeley Hill. Its exact purpose is unknown, although stone circles were important ceremonial places and may sometimes have been connected with burials or the marking of solar and lunar events.

Stapeley Hill – 403m / 1,322ft – We'll make the out-and-back climb onto the ridge to visit its two Bronze Age cairns. This is particularly appropriate for the walk because the rock used to construct Mitchell’s Fold is believed to have come from Stapeley Hill itself. From the ridge there are views towards Corndon Hill, the Welsh mountains and the Stiperstones.

Roundton Hill & Iron Age Hillfort – Crossing into Wales, Roundton is a distinctive volcanic hill rising steeply above the surrounding countryside. Its summit was occupied by an Iron Age hillfort, giving superb views back towards Corndon and west into the Welsh hills. The hill is now also an important nature reserve.

Corndon Hill – 513m / 1,683ft – The high point of the walk and a major landmark of this ancient border landscape. Corndon has evidence of prehistoric stone working/quarrying, part of a wider landscape where stone axes and axe-hammers were manufactured and traded over considerable distances.

This is a winter walk, please bring layers and appropriate footwear. Check weather before leaving home.
