STIRCHLEY FOOD AND FILM FEST | Palestinian short films with Maqloubeh | co-presented by Falasteen on film

Presented in partnership with Falasteen on Film CiC who specialise in bringing the best of Palestinian cinema to Brum (and soon Madrid!)

We will be screening 3 short films: 

• Maqloubeh (2012) by Nicolas Damunni - Five young students from different backgrounds share an apartment in Ramallah. Stuck in their apartment due to a curfew and bombings outside, their confinement inspires them to prepare a dish of Maqloubeh* for lunch. After initially disagreeing about which ingredients are needed, the roommates finally agree on a compromise. But just as they sit down to enjoy their meal, an unexpected occurrence interrupts them and turns everything upside down.

*Maqloubeh: a traditional Palestinian dish meaning "turn upside down."

• ⁠An Orange From Jaffa (2023) by Mohammed Almughanni - Mohammed, a young Palestinian, is desperately looking for a taxi to take him through an Israeli checkpoint. The driver, Farouk, discovers that Mohammed has already failed to cross the checkpoint. Trouble begins.

• ⁠An Untold Revolution - Food Sovereignty in Palestine (2021) by Ameen Nayfeh - Untold Revolution documents the beginning of the journey of the agricultural movement towards food sovereignty in Palestine, from an emancipatory ideological standpoint that seeks to break away from the dependence on the Israeli occupier and the global monopolistic companies.

We will be serving both meat and vegetarian maqloubeh on the day, with the ceremonial flipping of the upside down dish and grand reveal being a predicted highlight. 

We are also fundraising for charity Rivers of Mercy Clinic who will bring along some beautiful Palestinian foods such as honey and olive oil for sale, as well as a portion of ticket sales being donated to their vital work.
