Discover the beauty of Sashiko, the centuries-old Japanese stitching tradition that combines practicality with stunning design. Meaning "little stab", this simple running stitch was originally used to strengthen and warm garments, transforming everyday textiles into works of art.

In this relaxing and mindful workshop, you'll explore the rich history of Sashiko, learn about its connection to Boro mending, and master the essential tools and techniques used to create decorative textiles, handmade gifts, homewares, and visible repairs.

Perfect for beginners, Sashiko is portable, meditative, and requires only a few simple tools. Guided step-by-step, you'll create your own decorative stitched sample to frame, display, or transform into a unique handmade gift.

About the Facilitator:
Lucy Bourne is a textile artist specialising in hand weaving, with a passion for complex structures, fine yarns, and contemporary textile design. 

As Term 2 Artist in Residence at Stirling Street Arts Centre in 2026, Lucy explored innovative weaving techniques, including layering structures and creating bold "metaweave" textiles. Her work combines traditional craft with modern design, resulting in textiles that are both beautiful and functional. She also incorporates spinning, Sashiko stitching, dyeing, dressmaking, and sewing into her creative practice.
