Join weaver Ruth Day for a wonderfully tactile workshop where you’ll create your own one-of-a-kind woven artwork from natural materials.
Using soft natural fleece, with the option of adding a splash of naturally dyed colour, you’ll learn how to spin and twist the fibres by hand on your lap, discovering how simple movements transform fleece into textured yarn. You’ll then weave your handspun fibre onto a small loom that you’ve made yourself from reclaimed wood offcuts, set up with a strong linen warp.
As your piece takes shape, you can incorporate dried grasses and flowers directly into the weave for a beautifully organic finish. There’s also the option to include a small tube within the design, allowing you to refresh your artwork with seasonal or fresh flowers whenever you wish. You’ll leave with a unique woven piece and the skills to continue exploring natural fibre weaving at home.
Ruth has been falling down the weaving rabbit hole for some years now and is happy to pop up and encourage others to try it. She is inspired by the Devon countryside, particularly her garden and adjoining Iron-Age fort.
