An evening of Piano Masterpieces and Forgotten Melodies with JONATHAN ZOOB

Pianist Jonathan Zoob comes to St Mary’s with a richly varied programme of music by Joseph Haydn, Anatoly Liadov, Nikolai Medtner, Sergei Rachmaninov, and Frédéric Chopin.

The recital opens with Haydn’s Sonata in C major, Hob. XVI:48, a work full of clarity, wit, and Classical poise. From there, the programme moves into the colour and expressiveness of the Russian piano tradition, with Liadov’s Prelude in B minor, Medtner’s Canzona Serenata from Forgotten Melodies, and Rachmaninov’s Prelude in E-flat major. These works bring together lyricism, atmosphere, and emotional depth, offering moments of intimacy, richness, and reflection.

The programme concludes with two works by Chopin: the dramatic Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48 No. 1, and the elegant Impromptu in F-sharp major, Op. 36. Music at St Mary’s is the next chapter of our much-loved Fine Music for Free recital series. Each event offers a 45–60 minute performance, with wine and nibbles available before and after the recital. The musicians are usually available to chat afterwards, giving audiences the chance to meet the performers in an informal and welcoming setting.

Entry is by a minimum donation of £5, with ticket income and any additional donations shared between the musicians and the church, supporting both live music and the life of St Mary’s.
