1926 and all that

Tue 10 Nov 2026 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM Kirkham Grammar School, PR4 2BH

A public Lecture by Adrian Long, retired Head of Modern Languages and Sixth Form at KGS, now Curator of the Local History and Heritage Collection at St Michael’s.

As part of the celebrations for the centenary of the Anglican Diocese of Blackburn, the Parish Church, the School and the OKA are delighted to sponsor and host this lecture, which will look back at the year 1926, and the way it was very much the dawn of a modern world which we can readily recognise today.

This lecture is the first in a planned revival by the OKA of the Birley Lecture, which was staged for several years in the 1980s, named after the school’s famed 17th century benefactor Isabel Birley.

Mr Long’s lecture will take the audience through the world of 1926 with particular reference to Kirkham, its church and its grammar school, and also looking at some key national and international events and landmarks in politics, science, technology, the arts and sport.

There will be no charge for this event, but donations will be invited, to be split between charities nominated by the school and the church.
