SERIOUS GAME DESIGN & EXPERIMENTATION SEMINAR
Jim Wallman would like to invite you to take part in his forthcoming serious gaming and experimentation seminar CRITICAL THINKING & GAME DESIGN. This is a ticketed event with limited spaces.
Date: 8th August 2025
Start time: is 10:00 GMT
and we aim to finish around 16:30 GMT
Seminar: Critical Thinking & Game Design
We are sometimes under pressure to design a game to a purpose, or we might had had a thought ‘there is a game in that’ on some important subject that interests us.
And the resulting games are often very good. But are they genuinely fit for purpose? We can ask ourselves the question “How do we know that the game we have designed really does what it was intended to do?”. This seminar will explore methods and practice of both self-criticism and constructive criticism and use these important critical thinking questions to improve our serious game design practice.
Guest speaker for this seminar will be Graham Longley-Brown, veteran professional wargamer and author of “Successful Professional Wargames: A Practitioner's Handbook” and co-author of the widely used “Rapid Campaign Analysis Toolset (RCAT)”, the MOD Wargaming Handbook and the MOD Influence Wargaming Handbook.
Seminar Presentation : Applying critical thinking to game design
Practical sessions: “Designing with a critical eye”
and “Building games with constructive criticism
