A Day of Celtic Strings: From First Note to Final Bow

Hosted in the Stoney End Music Loft with Hannah Flowers

Have you ever been captivated by the ethereal sound of the harp and thought, "I wish I could do that"? Join us for a day of immersion into the Celtic Harp. Whether you want to dive into the full experience or just dip your toes in for a single session, the Loft is open to you.

The Schedule

  • 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM | Workshop Part 1: Foundations & First Notes Perfect for the absolute beginner. We’ll demystify the instrument, covering posture, hand placement, and the physics of the pluck. You’ll leave for lunch having already played your first few bars of music.

  • 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM | Workshop Part 2: Patterns & Folk Melodies Building on the morning session, we dive into the "Celtic" style. We’ll explore the rhythmic patterns and simple arrangements that give the harp its magical storytelling quality. (Prerequisite: Part 1 or very basic previous knowledge).

  • 4:00 PM | The Evening Concert (Open to the Public) The day culminates in an intimate performance by Hannah. This concert is open to everyone—bring a friend! Relax in the Loft and hear the instrument in its full glory; after the workshops, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for the magic happening on stage.

The Details

No Harp? No Problem! You don’t need to own an instrument to participate. You can rent a beautiful, handcrafted Stoney End harp from our floor for just $15 for the day. We’ll have it tuned and waiting for you in the Loft!

Flexible Registration:

  • Full Day Pass: Includes both workshops and a reserved seat for the concert.
  • A La Carte: Pick and choose! Sign up for just Part 1, Part 2, or just the Concert.
  • Concert Only: Tickets are available here and at the door for the general public.
    • Workshop participants receive priority seating for the 4:00 PM concert!

About the Instructor: Hannah Flowers

Hannah Flowers is a premier performer and educator specializing in the sensitive, lyrical accompaniment of Irish Traditional music. Her accolades include a Minnesota Arts Board Grant to study wire-strung harp in Kilkenny and a prestigious Fulbright research award to pursue her Master’s in Irish Traditional Music Performance.

With three solo albums to her credit—Amhrán na Cruite (2018), Hall-Gate House (2022) and The Harp and the Holly (2025)—Hannah’s work explores the deep connection between the Irish language and the harp. She is a frequent visiting artist at the Somerset Folk Harp Festival and the Huron Harp Festival, and serves as a core faculty member at the Center for Irish Music in St. Paul, MN. Hannah holds a B.A. in Music and a first-class Honours M.A. from Maynooth University, Ireland.
