Join us at the Stoney End Music Loft for The Yankee Tunesmiths, a special evening of early American music performed by the Mirandola Ensemble.

In celebration of the United States’ 250th Anniversary, Mirandola “gets the band back together” for a program exploring the rich and varied musical traditions of early America—from the Revolutionary era through the 19th century and toward the roots of American folk and bluegrass.

Performed entirely acoustically and without amplification, this concert is a perfect match for the Loft's intimate setting and natural acoustics.

What You’ll Hear

The Yankee Tunesmiths
Discover the music of some of America's earliest composers—farmers, horse breeders, blacksmiths, and other working people who composed music in their spare time. Hear the bold, energetic works of William Billings and other self-taught New England composers whose music helped define the sound of early American choral singing.

Shape-Note & Sacred Harp Traditions
Experience the distinctive harmonies and powerful community-singing traditions of shape-note and Sacred Harp music, which have remained an important part of American musical heritage.

Early American Hymnody
Hear fascinating early American hymns and arrangements that reveal the musical influences and creative traditions of the young United States.

Folk Music & the Seeds of Bluegrass
The program also explores the folk traditions that would eventually contribute to the development of distinctly American musical styles.

The Performers

The Mirandola Ensemble is a Minneapolis-based professional choral ensemble committed to the highest standards of vocal performance and to bringing the artistry, history, and traditions of early music to audiences throughout Minnesota and beyond.

Founded in 2011 by Scott Sandersfeld and led since 2016 by Artistic Director Nick Chalmers, Mirandola has performed throughout the Twin Cities and neighboring communities through concerts, residencies, and educational outreach.

For this special program, the ensemble's vocalists are joined by a stellar lineup of local instrumentalists:
