The Event
Pepper’s Ghost is one of the earliest Victorian illusions and was famously used by Walt Disney for his Phantom Manor theme-park attraction. This popular illusion also features in Scareground, Angela Kecojevic’s children's book about a haunted funfair.

In this fun and interactive workshop, you’ll discover how the illusion works and have a go at creating your own Pepper’s Ghost effect. Inspired by Victorian images from this time period, you’ll have an opportunity to write your own spooky story or poem, with guidance and encouragement from Angela.

About Angela Kecojevic
Angela Kecojevic has published eight books for Oxford University Press, and is also the author behind Hobbledown, the award-winning adventure park in Surrey. Scareground is her spooky middle grade novel which was nominated for a Young Quills award by the Historical Association. She teaches creative writing to children and visits schools and festivals running spooky workshops.

About Scareground

Adopted by a family of bakers, 12-year-old orphan Nancy Crumpet's life is a delightful mix of flour, salt, and love, yet her mind is brimming with questions no one can answer. Where are her birth parents? Why must she keep her mysterious birthmark hidden? And why are all the adults terrified of the fairground?

Faced with an opportunity to enter the Scareground, Nancy and her best friend discover a place of dark magic, where rides come ,to life and there's a mystery around every corner. When she meets the fair's sinister owner, Skelter, Nancy faces secrets more horrifying than she could ever have imagined.

Tickets
Children under 12 must have an adult with them at all times. Babes in arms do not require a ticket.

Directions
We The Curious, BS1 5HL, is in Millennium Square in the centre of Bristol. There is plenty of cycle parking, it is a short walk from many city centre bus stops and 20 minutes from Bristol Temple Meads. You could also get a ferry!

If you are travelling by car, the venue is within the Bristol Clean Air Zone so you may incur a fee if you use a vehicle. There is a car park directly underneath the venue, with 22 blue badge spaces and lifts for access. Use BS1 5LL to get to Millennium Square Car Park.

About the venue
We The Curious is an interactive science museum, with a cafe, shop and main entrance. Storytale Festival is on the top floor, accessible from the side door that opens out onto Millennium Square, very near the shiny metal Planetarium. Look out for our signs and volunteers who will show you where to go.

Once you are in the door, there is a lift to the top floor, with accessible toilets and a large main room (The Rosalind Franklin Room). There will be buggy parking, a cloakroom and activities in that space. The events will mainly be taking place in rooms that immediately join onto the main room. There is also a balcony space outside. We will have headphones and a sensory space.
