It's official, hunnies: Straight Up's first ever IRL book club is happening and we could not be more excited! We heard you when you said you wanted more live events, more book content and a chance to chat with your fellow culture-obsessed huns, so we've been hard at work planning the most special Sunday for us all. 

Hosted at our fave hotel the Hoxton's absolutely gorgeous private apartment in Holborn, there's going to be coffee, cocktails and loads of time for us all to hang out, as well as a proper debrief on one of the most hotly anticipated new books of the year. This special live event won't be recorded so the only way to get involved is to come IRL on the day!

Our first pick is the debut novel Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy, about a 17-year-old student who pursues a relationship with her married creative writing teacher. It’s set to be a “dark, poignant and unflinchingly funny” exploration of power, class and desire, and follows up her incredible memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, which sold over three million copies and which we know so many of you loved. It’s the perfect book for a super-juicy discussion on all the themes we dissect on the pod each week and we cannot wait to get into it together.

Coming solo? Amazing. The vibe will be perfect for meeting people (if you feel like it). 

Half His Age is out Jan 20 and available to pre-order here. Don’t worry if you can’t finish it in time for the book club, as long as you don’t mind a few spoilers!

What to expect on the day

• 12pm: Arrive for unlimited tea/coffee and pastries, which are both included in your £25 ticket.
• 12:15pm: Ellie and Kathleen will kick-off the discussion with a 45-minute deep-dive on the book, like the regular Straight Up eps you know and love!
• 1pm: A short interval to grab a drink from the bar and chat to us and the other huns. 
• 1:15pm: Open discussion about the book (no pressure to speak if you'd rather just listen). 
• 2:00pm: An opportunity to shape the next ep of the podcast! There'll be a suggestions box going round at the start and everyone is encouraged to pop a culture rec, celeb headline or general talking point for potential inclusion the following week.
• 2:30-3:30pm: Come chat to us at the bar!
