ATLANTIC CROSSING is a cross-cultural, all-female international collaboration between the two established duos Woodlands and Jocelyn & Ellen, merging Scandinavian, Celtic and North American traditional music. With two fiddles, harp and cello, as well as step dancing and singing, the double duo weave a powerfully rhythmic and textured sound.
First meeting in Glasgow while pursuing Master’s studies in Scottish music, Woodlands and Jocelyn & Ellen found together a kindred musical spirit. They have joined forces to create exciting new music, with nuanced arrangements of traditional, contemporary and original melodies from both sides of the Atlantic.
Woodlands consists of Swedish champion fiddler Kristina Leesik and harpist Justyna Krzyżanowska. The duo showcases an intense diversity of beautiful songs, sweeping melodies and expressive performances of jigs and reels from the Celtic tradition and blends it with influences from Swedish folk music, jazz and pop. They met at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in 2017 and continued their musical journey together some years later at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where they both deepened their knowledge of the Scottish folk music tradition. Their debut album “Woodlands” was released in 2020 and was praised in both Sweden and the UK. Since then, Woodlands has frequently toured Sweden, been played in radio (BBC Radio 3, Swedish Radio P2), written the children’s show “The King’s Crown”, arranged choir music (collaboration with HAGA Vocal Ensemble) and played at notable festivals such as Urkult, Norrköping Folkmusikfestival, Umefolk and Saltofolk.
Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira are a dynamic North American fiddle & cello duo. As 2024 Canadian Folk Music Award Winners for “Traditional Album of the Year”, their album All It Brings is hailed as “dazzling” (FolkWorld), and “simply exquisite” (Folk London). With Jocelyn on fiddle and Ellen on cello, they fuse traditional and contemporary music styles to create a powerfully uplifting and soulful performance. Complemented with vocal harmonies and lively step dancing, they bring life and fire into original tunes, and high-energy repertoire from Scotland, Ireland, North America, and Scandinavia. The duo has been featured in live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, and performed at international festivals including Celtic Connections, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Celtic Colours International Festival, and New World Festival.
