An Iliad
AUGUST 30- SEPTEMBER 18

AN ILIAD  is a modern-day retelling of Homer’s classic. Poetry, humor, the ancient tale of the Trojan War and the modern world collide in this captivating theatrical experience. The setting is simple: the empty theater. The time is now: the present moment. The lone figure onstage is a storyteller – possibly Homer, possibly one of the many bards who followed in his footsteps. He is fated to tell this story throughout history.  Strawberry Theatre Workshop presents Amy Thone in Lisa Peterson & Denis O'Hare's adaption; winner of Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards for Best Play in 2010.

  • "There is no denying the enormous effort this performance requires.. The Poet holds us rapt in his story until he is ready to release us... creating multiple personalities, including Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroclus, Hector and Paris. He shifts from character to character, exposing their vulnerabilities and vanities through their musings and bitter exchanges. It’s an emotional and physical performance that, at times, is a spectacle to watch. Every movement and scene are brilliantly accommodated." ––Mark Reinecke, Around the Town Chicago

  • "This is more than a play—it’s an experience, one that lingers long after the house lights come up. It forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about history, humanity, and the violence we’ve never managed to outgrow." ––Frank Meccia, Court Theatre
  • "This Homeric account of the Trojan War unfolds passionately, urgently, humorously, sorrowfully — to a modern world that has still not learned to lay down its own swords and shields. Intimate, unstuffy, timely, accessible.”The Seattle Times
  • An Iliad is pure theater: shocking, glorious, primal, and deeply satisfying.”—Time Out NY
  • A brilliant and thrilling adaptation.” — Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Explosive, altogether breathtaking…uncannily brilliant”—Chicago Sun-Times
  • A radical new dramatization...formidably powerful”—Chicago Tribune
  • Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson connect classical and contemporary images of war in their smart, powerful, and surprisingly funny play.”—Time Out Chicago
