Lili Boulanger completed the orchestral version of D’un matin de printemps in 1918, during the final months of her life; she died that March at 24. The piece is just a few minutes long, written with an adeptness and economy that makes its orchestral detail all the more striking.

From there, we turn to two works written 22 years apart by Shostakovich. The Fifth Symphony dates from 1937; the First Cello Concerto followed in 1959, written for Mstislav Rostropovich and scored around the solo cello with an unusually lean orchestra. Julian Schwarz joins the SOB once again for this momentous season closer.
