Saturday June 13:

7:00: THE SULLIVAN SISTERS
8:00: DON STIERNBERG AND THE BLUEGRASSTICS

For Day Two of our Down Home Weekend it's all bluegrass, all day. Our evening show pairs an internationally renowned mandolin player (in a remarkable ensemble of bluegrass veterans) with the jaw-dropping talent of a pair of young artists representing the next generation keeping this glorious music alive.

The Sullivan Sisters
I first met the Sullivan Sisters when they were 15 & 17 and they came to my recording studio to record their first EP. I cannot tell you how unprepared I was for what I heard from these two high school students. Mind. Blown. The only thing that was more impressive than their astounding talent was how almost annoyingly nice their entire family was. I knew immediately I was in the presence of something special. Turns out I was already late to the party. The Sullivan Sisters have dazzled audiences since childhood with their unique blend of fast bluegrass picking and captivating sibling harmonies, with music ranging from lyrical originals to timeless folk classics to blazing instrumentals. Inspired by the bluegrass community in North Carolina where they were born and raised, Soraya and Luciya began taking guitar and banjo lessons at ages 8 and 6. Their music drew influence from the bluegrass community surrounding them, and they carried their love of the genre with them when they relocated to Chicago. They are quickly becoming known throughout the country, touring and winning competitions. Fast forward to the present and Soraya is a rising junior at Berklee School of Music and Luciya – just graduated from ETHS – is headed to join her sister at Berklee in the fall with a full ride. They have formed a fabulous band and are working on their first album with Dark Shadow Recording in Nashville. I am so excited to welcome them to Studio5. Soraya and Luciya will be joined onstage with their bandmate, the talented young fiddler, Finn McGuinness. –SR

Don Stiernberg and the Bluegrasstics
Friends of Studio5 are familiar with Don Stiernberg. In fact, mandolin fans worldwide are familiar with Don Stiernberg. What you may not know is that Don is the reason I came to Chicago. We were college bandmates in Wisconsin and I followed Don south across the Cheddar Curtain to make music. Through years of changes, Don has been a constant in my life, and I couldn't be more grateful. Don is the undisputed master of the jazz mandolin, having learned from – and played alongside – the legendary father of the jazz mandolin, Jethro Burns. Don has brought his jazz group to Studio5 a number of times and is always a crowd favorite. But for our Down Home Weekend, Don is returning to his musical roots and performing the bluegrass music he's played artfully since he was a child. Check out the video above to see the kind of musical company he keeps! And for our Down Home Weekend, Don has assembled a unique, phenomenal ensemble (The Bluegrasstics!) specifically for this event, featuring bassist Jim Cox, the great singer/guitarist Ben Benedict, and one of the founding members of another incredible bluegrass group, the Henhouse Prowlers, banjo player Ben Wright. This is going to be a fortunate evening for all of us in the room. –SR
