The exciting ensemble Raíces (Roots) pays homage to the originators of Latin Jazz such as Cal Tjader, Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria and also performs original music composed in the same genre. Last year we were proud to present Raíces in celebration of the release of their debut self-titled recording. Led by vibraphonist Joe Sonnefeldt, their Studio5 performance was beautiful and powerful … and bittersweet, as the concert happened to occur just days after Ruben Alvarez, the group’s founder, passed away following a long illness. We are excited to welcome Raíces back to our stage in an evening that will celebrate both their music and their beloved founder. The joyous spirit of legendary Chicago percussionist Ruben Alvarez lives on in the songs and rhythms carried forward by his friends and colleagues. –SR
