Chris Greene is a charming guy and a great player, and it’s been too long since this Evanston native has been on the Studio5 stage. His band, the Chris Greene Quartet has had essentially the same lineup since its inception in 2005 (ok, the new guy, drummer Steve Corley joined the band in 2011 … 13 years ago). Chris’ arrangements and compositions for the CGQ delight in the playful use of unusual time signatures, and the group performs his music with the depth that comes from longstanding friendships. How to describe it? Funk, hip-hop, rock, pop, blues … reggae? Yes.

Chris Greene has played with everyone from Common to the Temptations to Andrew Bird. The CGQ’s most recent release, PlaySPACE 2 - Play Harder recently received a 4.5 star rating from DownBeat Magazine. The band has received numerous accolades, but if you were to ask Chris, he is quick to tell you that the most meaningful honor he has received was one just bestowed: The 2023 City of Evanston Mayor’s Arts Award, handed to him by his mayor, in his home town. We are fortunate to share Evanston with such a talented musician and welcome him back to Studio5. –SR
