Fareed Haque & Goran Ivanovic, guitars
Two GIANTS of the guitar. Truly. And from vastly different parts of the world: Goran Ivanovic is from Croatia, and Fareed Haque's mother and father were from Chile and Pakistan, respectively. Here's what Howard Reich wrote about one of their recordings:
Although the music on this extraordinarily sensitive guitar-duo recording transcends genre, there’s no resisting its mix of American jazz, acoustic blues, flamenco rhythm and Macedonian melody. Only two guitarists on the planet would come up with such a concoction, but Ivanovic and Haque (whose roots run to Yugoslavia and South Asia, respectively) play as if they’re speaking the same musical language. Those who have heard the duo in concert probably will conclude that no recording could capture fully the sparks that fly between these two virtuosos. But this disc at least documents the distinctly cross-continental flavor of their restlessly innovative work.
Though I've not met him, I have been aware of Goran Ivanovic's work for some time and have long hoped to present him at Studio5. Fareed Haque and I know each other from when we were music students at Northwestern at the same time, what was it, 150 years ago? I have always loved Fareed's music and haven't seen him in years. This past summer I was approached by our mutual friends (and fellow musicians) Christy Bennett and Casey Nielsen, asking if we'd consider hosting a fundraiser for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) at Studio5, with the featured artists being Fareed and Goran. I jumped in with both feet. I look forward to seeing and hearing Fareed again, I look forward to meeting and hearing Goran in person, and I look forward to helping out with a very worthy cause. Just so you know how it will work, everything we make in ticket sales above our base expenses for the evening we will donate to the ACLU. So by purchasing a ticket you will not only be treated to a dazzling evening of music (click on the image above to check out a clip!), you will be helping a most worthwhile cause. For those interested, the evening will feature a silent auction (also to benefit the ACLU) beginning when the doors open at 7:30. Just think: We can do something good and have lots of fun at the same time. Hope you can join us. –SR
Who is the ACLU?
Born out of their defense of anti-war speech during WWI and coming to prominence for their defense in the Scopes trial, for over 100 years, the American Civil Liberties Union has been fighting and lobbying for our free speech and all our civil rights. The ACLU does not receive government funding directly or indirectly. Their work is funded by member dues, as well as contributions and grants from private foundations and individuals.
Christy Bennett and Casey Nielsen are coordinating the ACLU fundraising piece of this event, in partnership with a group called Working Family Solidarity. For detailed information on the ACLU and Working Family Solidarity, click HERE. If you would like to know how you can provide even more support by being a sponsor, or if you just have questions about this fundraiser, please email Christy at christy.bennett.jazz@gmail.com. Working Family Solidarity builds unity between low and moderate-income families of different backgrounds, especially African American and Latin@, to struggle together for equitable development. WFS fights for racial equity and economic justice by focusing primarily on increasing working families' access to good jobs and affordable housing. Addressing these two areas means that they often work on issues of immigration, civil rights, and criminal justice.
