Joel Paterson's music puts an immediate smile on my face. He blends jazz, swing, blues, country – all kinds of classic roots music – into his own unique style, making it at once nostalgic and brand new ... and always with a sense of humor. Every time he visits our stage I am eager to bring him back. There are so many different examples of his work to hear on the internet, but I picked one fun one to share above. Check it out. See what I mean? For this particular Studio5 show Joel will be joined by saxophonist Natalie Scharf and the dynamic rhythmic section of upright bassist Jeffrey Parker and drummer Alex Hall.

Joel has been a mainstay of the Chicago roots music scene for years, and his Quartet plays weekly at the iconic Green Mill Cocktail Lounge. He is known worldwide for his instrumental recordings reminiscent of Les Paul (his album, Hi-Fi Christmas Guitar has become a holiday cult classic, even making the Rolling Stone list of top Christmas albums of 2018). So join us for Joel Paterson’s history of guitar pickin,’ including his fingerstyle Beatles arrangements, a healthy dose of blues, classic jazz, Chet Atkins, and much more! –SR
