The Metropolitan Jazz Octet has performed at Studio5 several times, and each time they bring a new and exciting project to our stage. Here is a bit of background: The original MJO was founded back in the 1950s by saxophonist/arranger/composer Tom Hilliard. Tom went on to become a noted educator whose music and mentorship inspired many jazz musicians in Chicago. One of his mentees was another extraordinary saxophonist/arranger/composer, Jim Gailloreto, who now leads the group, keeping Hilliard's vision alive. In fact, the current MJO contains several former Hilliard students. The MJO builds on Hilliard's legacy by creating exciting new works which we have heard on the Studio5 stage, including projects with vocalists Dee Alexander and Paul Marinaro. For this project, however, the MJO goes back to the source. Their newest album, Jazz Unearthed engages in musical archeology, presenting a set of Hilliard's miniature masterpieces that shine light on long-lost styles of jazz from the 1950s. Each composition embodies playful elegance, brilliant craftsmanship, and authentic personality. This is going to be so cool. Join us for an exciting evening of musical time traveling with a masterful group! –SR
