Double-bass virtuoso brings his trio to Studio5

I hope you can join us for the dreamy, beautiful, ethereal sounds of this masterful trio. I knew of Larry Gray long before I knew him. When I entered the Chicago music community, Larry was already legendary. A musician’s musician, Larry has played with pretty much anyone you could imagine (a short list: Jack DeJohnette, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Williams, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, James Moody, Sonny Stitt, Larry Coryell, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson). And he’s a rare breed that moves effortlessly between jazz and classical music, on multiple instruments, most notably cello and bass. I recall being intimidated when I first met him about a decade ago simply because he was so highly respected. It turned out he was not just a monstrous player, but a truly sweet, warm guy. Larry has performed at Studio5 before, but this appearance will mark his first time leading his own group and playing some of his own compositions. Larry will be joined by two other accomplished players, drummer Clif Wallace, and a native of Sierra Leone, pianist LLN. This is certain to be a special night, with deep music by astounding artists. –SR
