I have known the talented Brazilian guitarist/vocalist/composer Luciano Antonio for many years. We first became acquainted through our mutual friends, Neusa and Breno Sauer, considered by many the matriarch and patriarch of Brazilian music here in Chicago. Luciano was virtually their adopted son (both personally and musically), and I knew Luciano was a beautiful spirit as soon as I met him. Tremendously talented, he has performed at Studio5 several times, but never with an ensemble of this size. Luciano appeared recently at the Chicago Jazz Festival with his octet and we thought it would be tremendous fun to bring the same group to our intimate stage. We can’t wait! –SR

Luciano Antonio owns the distinction of opening for 3 legends of his native Brazil – Caetano Veloso, Vinicius Cantuaria and Virginia Rodriguez – and has become a headliner with his own following since moving to Chicago. He first came here commuting from Kansas City to play in the popular Brazilian music group Chicago Samba. He has since recorded two full albums of original material plus a Live At The Jazz Showcase album, on which he shows off his considerable range of moving from notes of plaintive simplicity to harmonies of great fullness and complexity. His Octet features Hannah Fujisaki on piano, Gerald Martinez on reeds, Brian Schwab on trumpet, Matt Kowalski on trombone, Jonathon Wenzel on drums and Heitor Garcia on percussion, under Music Director Marcel Bonfim on Bass.
