Live at Studio5! BEN LEWIS TRIO "Magic in the Moment - Round 2"

BEN LEWIS TRIO
Magic in the Moment - Round 2

Ben Lewis, piano
Jeremiah Hunt, bass
Frank Morrison, drums

One of my favorite pianists is the remarkable Ben Lewis. Just listen to the clip above from one of his previous Studio5 appearances. Sheesh. Ben is not only a stunning player (and a great guy), he also carefully plans his Studio5 appearances around specific topics or themes. A couple of years ago he asked me what I thought of a show where his plan was to have no plan at all. I loved the idea, and so did the audience. In other words, he assembled a trio and in the truest sense of jazz, they would improvise without pre-planning what they would play. Purely in the moment, they would decide on a tune and play it ... no conversation, no arrangement. Go. There is an extremely important distinction between "unrehearsed" and "unprepared". When you are a musician at the level of Ben and his talented peers, you have been preparing for decades. In an unrehearsed performance like this, audience members get to witness a musical high-wire act without a net, the intimacy of raw creation. We thought it was time to revisit this concept for Round 2.

When we first talked about Music in the Moment, Ben texted me this:
It can be terrifying, arriving at the start of something undiscovered, devoid of preparation or intent. But that, for jazz musicians, that is where the purest Magic is found. This concert invites you to share with the musicians on stage the joy, the poignancy and exhilaration that lives and breathes in each of those unrehearsed, unplanned moments. You will hear great music, yes - but also gain a deeper understanding & exploration of what it feels like for the musicians… a rare chance to have that conversation.

Oh boy. I'm going to be front and center for this one. –SR
