VERY authentic music from the 1920s & 30s
It’s been a full year since these guys have been to Studio5, I’ve seen them many times and I can honestly say I never, ever get enough. Andy Schumm’s group plays extraordinarily authentic 1920s & 30s jazz and it swings harder than absolutely anything. Just check out the clip above. I recall that the last time they were at Studio5 a woman commented to me, wide-eyed, that she had never heard music like that live, and she was transfixed. Time-traveled. Welcome to the club, ma’am.
I remember the first time I heard a record by them on the radio and I actually pulled over (seriously, I did) because it was so confusing: I feel like I know a decent amount about the music from the 1920s & 30s and this track was GREAT, but I couldn’t place it. Plus, the recording quality was so good that it felt anachronistic. I waited at the side of the road until the announcer told me I was not only listening to a recording of a current band, but they were right here in Chicago! I Googled them and hauled myself to the Green Mill to hear and meet them. That was more than 10 years ago and happily they subsequently performed at Studio5. The leader of the Cellar Boys, Andy Schumm and I became closer pals during Covid when my sons and I created Into The Mist, our weekly immersive, online 1920s-themed experience, which, truth be told, was designed around the intoxicating music of the Cellar Boys. For weeks on end in 2021 the Cellar Boys and I gathered at Studio5 in front of only cameras and microphones as each installment of Into The Mist culminated in a virtual Zoom party featuring the band for hundreds of online patrons. Somehow we survived and remained sane. Well, we survived ... not so sure about the sane part. I can't think of a better way to wrap up our Fall season than with the exuberant music of The Cellar Boys. Join us for a festive evening of extraordinary jazz from a bygone era. –SR
