The Art of Noticing
Studio Seren hosts a year-round ikebana programme at Somerset House, with seasonal workshops held within the soft, pastel-toned setting of Café Petiole.
Led by Serena Sensei, a Kyoto-trained 1st Grade Ikebana Instructor, each 90-minute session explores moribana (盛り花), an open style of ikebana centred on line, balance and space. Working with seasonal flowers, grasses and sculptural branches, guests learn to observe each material and create an arrangement inspired by the character of the season.
The 2026 Season Continues
4 October | Autumn: Movement & Balance
1 November | Late Autumn: Space & Stillness
13 December | Winter: Light & Simplicity
The Experience
Each session begins with a demonstration and introduction to the principles and theory of ikebana, followed by guided practice in moribana.
Seasonal flowers, grasses and branches are selected to reflect the season, with practical guidance on preparing and placing each element.
Through the process, guests explore the relationship between line, balance, proportion, texture and negative space, learning how these principles shape a considered ikebana composition.
Included
• Seasonal flowers and natural materials
• Guidance from Serena Sensei, a Kyoto-trained First Grade Ikebana Instructor
• Use of traditional Kyoto vessels, ikebana scissors and kenzan during the session
• An introduction to the basic principles of ikebana, with techniques to continue creating at home
