Evening Jazz session, 24th June 8pm
Monthly jazz sessions, 8 – 10pm
Sussex’s top jazz musicians will get together and dive into the great jazz canon — and who knows what magic might happen…
Each month, you’ll find a different band reimagining jazz, keeping its roots alive and kicking while, maybe, giving it a modern makeover. New guest artists will join us every month, bringing fresh sounds and making sure the energy never stops.
This month, we introduce The Dime Notes who dig back into the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz, unearthing a repertoire of stomps, blueses, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols.
The band grew out of a duo project with Chris Barber’s long-time clarinetist David Horniblow and American pianist Andrew Oliver, who arrived in London in 2013 and met David at a gig. They got together to play some Jelly Roll Morton tunes and began a weekly residency at an east London cocktail bar, working on a repertoire of obscure 1920s tunes.
Since Andrew’s return to the U.S the quartet have continued with Sam Watts, accomplished UK pianist and composer living in London known for his polished playing and wide range of interests. He has performed and recorded with many great artists, including Jean Toussaint, Jason Miles, Jason Marsalis, Ray Warleigh, Abram Wilson and Judi Jackson.
The Dime Notes present a fresh take on a timeless style, emphasizing the propulsive grooves and sultry melodies which made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular.
Set in a relaxed, characterful venue with a buzzing atmosphere, this is an evening designed to bring people together. Come alone or with friends; the vibe is warm and friendly, the energy is lively, and the music fills the room with an irresistible hum.
