About this Session

Service children can face unique challenges throughout their education due to parental deployment, mobility and changes in family circumstances. Planned alongside SCiP (Service Children's Progression Alliance), this interactive session will explore the experiences of service children, the potential impact on educational outcomes and wellbeing, and how schools and colleges can provide effective support. You will be introduced to the Thriving Lives Toolkit, gaining practical guidance on how it can be used within your setting. There will also be opportunities to discuss current practice, share ideas and learn from colleagues across the region.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the experiences of Service Children and Military Families
  • Explore how the Thriving Lives Toolkit can support whole-setting approaches
  • Share effective practice and discuss strategies with colleagues

About the SUN CPD Programme 2026-27

  • The Southern Universities Network (SUN) CPD Programme offers a range of free professional development opportunities for colleagues working across education and student support.
  • This year's programme brings together expert speakers and experienced practitioners to explore some of the key issues affecting learners today, from supporting specific student groups and improving wellbeing, to helping young people navigate their next steps in education and employment.
  • Our training is suitable for school and college staff, including teachers, senior leaders, pastoral teams, governors, careers and administrative staff, as well as university colleagues working in recruitment, outreach, teaching and student support roles, and local authority staff working within education services.
  • Each session is designed to provide practical ideas, useful insights and opportunities to learn from others across the sector.Whether you're working directly with learners or helping shape institutional practice, we hope you'll leave with knowledge and approaches that can be applied within your own role and setting
