NORTH SEA WATER - “VROUW HOLLE” with Imelda Almqvist
In this webinar we will meet an ancient Northern European/Germanic deity called Vrouw Holle in Dutch (Frau Holle in German). She is a complex character and her role (sacred office) became misunderstood once Northern Europe became Christianized. She became feared and demonized.
Mother Holle is connected to winter. In the Netherlands we say that “Vrouw Holle is shaking out her (down feather) pillows”, when it snows. She presides over the domestic arts of spinning and weaving, especially at the year end, when special rituals are required to keep the world safe and the Universe balanced. Some call Holle the Mother of Witches.
She is also a soul conductor (psycho pomp) for children. There are many reports of her roaming the land and flying through the night sky accompanied by the spirits of dead children. This phenomenon is called The Wild Hunt of Vrouw Hollle. In Middle Dutch the name of the Milky Way was Vroneldenstraet: the street or highway of Frau Holle!
She is also known as the Hyllemoer (Danish) or Elder Mother and closely associated with the spirit of the Elder Tree. As a new religion, Christianity, took over, the crucial role Holle plays, patrolling the liminal zone between Life and Death, was no longer understood or appreciated. Her deep compassion for life, especially young life, was no longer felt.
Vrouw Holle deserves to return to our collective consciousness and take her rightful place as an ancient Germanic goddess! As spinning and weaving connects her to the Powers of Fate, every participant will receive a one minute divination from Holle on a (brief!) question of their choice, (by means of a High Seat Ceremony with Germanic flavour).
