Character into Narrative (an 8 week improv course, beginning Saturday 28th October 2023)
Sat 28 Oct 2023 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Theatre Deli London (Leadenhall Street), EC3A 4AF
Description
CHARACTER INTO NARRATIVE
For me, character + relationships = narrative!
An 8 week course in which you will improvise lots of characters and do plenty of scene-work.
Towards the end of the 8 weeks we'll experiment with a couple of narrative formats too, putting all that groundwork into practise.
- Experiment with me!
- Play lots of characters
- Explore emotionally connected scenes
- Be pushed out of your comfort zone
- Choose (or be given) a specific improv goal to work on throughout the 8 weeks
- Learn a narrative format
One week we will also be joined by guest tutor, the brilliant actor and improviser Dan Starkey who will share his expertise in using voice/accent in characterisation.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This is for improvisers who want to practise improvising characters other than themselves and who would like to explore making relationships between characters matter. Emotional connection and making things matter is at the heart of great improv - also it's fun!
If you want to learn about narrative, or you want to get deeper into narrative and experiment with it, then this course is for you.
Not suitable for complete beginners.
If you have any questions about it, drop me a message.
WHEN & WHERE?
The first session of the course will be on Saturday 28th October (2pm-4pm), and will run every Saturday until December 16th (2pm-4pm).
All sessions take place at Theatre Deli, 107 Leadenhall Street, London, EC3A 4AF
WHO IS TEACHING THIS?
Me! I'm Susan Harrison and I'm an improviser, actor and character comedian.
I am a longstanding member of Oliver Award Winning Showstopper! The Improvised Musical with whom I perform nationally and on the West End.
During my 11 years with Showstopper I have learnt a lot about improvised narrative and am excited to share those thoughts with improv students. I also improvise with Mischief Movie Night (Mischief Theatre) and have been lucky enough to play with West End hit show Austentatious.
I have my own show These Folk (alongside Justin Brett) an improvised folk musical, and I also perform with improv duo BEINGS at Hoopla. I am all about characters, playfulness and emotional connection.
I teach for Hoopla (London's biggest improv school) and have also taught improv at Mountview, GSA, ALRA, The Bridge, The Actors Centre, as well as at improv festivals in Ireland, Scotland and Rome.
I teach improvisers of all levels of experience and am passionate about creating a supportive and playful learning environment.

WHO IS THE GUEST TEACHER?
Dan Starkey is a highly accomplished actor. You may have seen him on Doctor Who, Good Omens, Inside Number 9...or you may have heard him in one of his many appearances on Radio 4. Dan is also an excellent improviser. He's a member of Bumper Blyton (improvised adventures for grown ups) and has improvised for 50 hours non-stop (!) in several London 50 hour Improvathons.
TESTIMONIALS
“Susan delivers world-class coaching. She brings out the best in people, and helps them realise their full potential.” (David Symington – Character in Improv Course student)
“Susan Harrison has a very tactical approach and gives very specific constructive notes that help each individual to work on their weakest points and therefore improve more quickly. It was a pleasure to be taught by someone so talented and enthusiastic yet highly approachable”. (Lola Maxwell – Character in Improv Course student)
In January 2020 I designed and led a two day workshop in Birmingham for veterans of war, with Bravo 22. Bravo 22 Company is a recovery through the arts programme by The Royal British Legion and The Drive Project.
One of the participants wrote that the improv workshops gave them – “the opportunity to cast off the chains that restrict our ability to just be silly and allow me to laugh in a way I’ve not laughed for a long time.”
Anther participant wrote – “After just the first day of workshops, I realised that I felt excited about the future again – the workshops had given me a renewed sense of hope and a huge boost in my confidence“
