Inspiring Progressive Futures: Law in the age of Artificial Intelligence

Wed 11 Feb 2026 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM GMT Sussex School for Progressive Futures space, Library, University of Sussex, BN1 9QL

Robot lawyers, online courts, and algorithmic sentencing - what is the future of law in the age of artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is changing everyday life – including the way legal services are delivered and experienced. Can AI help draft a letter, check facts, or spot unfairness? Who is responsible if it gets things wrong? And what does this mean for future jobs?

Join Dr Sarah Stephens (Associate Professor, Legal Innovation), Shaun Ring (PhD researcher in Law & Technology), and Matt Pollins (technology/media lawyer) for a fast, fun, jargon-free session. We’ll show simple, real examples, bust the biggest myths (“Will robots replace lawyers?”), and explain where human judgement still matters most.

This session is for sixth form students and current University of Sussex students interested in law, politics, computer science, and innovation. No prior knowledge is required – just curiosity!

In this session you will:

  • learn how AI is changing core legal tasks and how to spot the issues
  • ask questions during a Q&A
  • find out more about Sussex modules, skills pathways and project ideas across law, policy, and tech.
