Course Description
'I can't begin to describe how peaceful and calm I felt from the moment I arrived to the time that I left. Staff were welcoming and friendly, the food was delicious and the whole site is amazing. The tutor was lovely and clearly knowledgeable. Other people on the course were also really supportive of each other. I am thrilled with what I learnt on the course and have done nothing but chat about it since getting home. I feel really empowered. Thank you.'
At a glance, this course:
- supports people's wellbeing
- uses natural materials
- empowers women
About the workshop

This course is intended to give women the core knowledge and confidence to safely use simple hand tools and timber to create your own projects at home. Your friendly tutor, Danielle, will help your build a chosen item to take home at the end of the day. Select from a variety of projects including a tool caddy, platter, planter or bird box. You will be working in a small class of six women so there will be plenty of support from your tutor.
During the day, you will learn about other tools that you may find at home, opening up the world of DIY in a welcoming, supportive environment where no question is a silly question.
You will learn how to:
- correctly use measuring and marking equipment
- safely cut timber with a hand saw and, where appropriate, a power saw
- use screws, nails and drill bits correctly for a given application
- use abrasives/sandpaper and select the appropriate grit for the finish
The course will teach you:
The aim of the day is not to leave with a perfect faultless product, but to have built up your confidence, skill sets and knowledge at your own pace.
You will leave with:
- your project, either finished or with the knowledge of how to finish it
- a handout of the course contents as a reminder of what was learnt
- more confidence and skills to use everyday household tools
- the knowledge of basic construction and woodwork principles
- the general sense of wellbeing and self-empowerment that comes with a day of woodwork!
This course is suitable for:
Beginners and those wishing to improve their woodworking skills.
What to bring:
- closed toe footwear (trainers or boots are ideal).
- clothes you don't mind getting dirty or dusty suitable for being outdoors all day. This course will take place in our Woodland Classroom.

About the tutor

Danielle Richardson is trained in traditional wooden boat building and has worked in a number of boatyards over the years. She then took a position as workshop manager at a Wood Recycling Project reusing timber, saving it from landfill and making beautiful products. The project gave volunteers, many of whom were struggling to get back into work, skills to take forwards with them in future careers. Danielle found during her time with the project, that women were often the least confident but most able to produce quality, well thought-out items. |
