About the workshop
This one-day Woodland Management course is designed for those who work and teach in woodland environments, and is equally suitable for anyone with a keen interest in woodlands and the natural habitat. Covering woodland ecology, basic site surveying and management planning, trees, wildlife, and relevant legislation, the course provides participants with a solid understanding of the woodland ecosystem and how to maximise its educational and ecological potential while following a low-impact approach.
Participants will also explore tree biomechanics, the principles of Leave No Trace and minimal-impact practice, together with the principles of responsible woodland stewardship. Throughout the day, discussion and observation are encouraged, providing opportunities for participants to explore their own curiosities, ask questions, and share perspectives. By developing a deeper understanding of woodland environments and our responsibility to care for them, this course equips participants to help protect, value, and inspire respect for our woodlands in future generations.
The course will give you:
- An understanding of woodland structure and woodland ecology
- An understanding of basic management planning
- An understanding of the importance of deadwood for conservation
- An understanding of legislation related to trees and the woodland
This course is suitable for:
Forest School Leaders or anyone using a woodland environment as an outdoor space for learning and development. It is also suitable for anyone with an interest in the subject.
What to bring:
- Weather-appropriate, layered outdoor clothing and stout shoes or walking boots
- Notepad, pencil and camera
- Plant & tree identification guides if you have any
- Packed lunch or lunch can be purchased from the Beech Cafe

About the tutor
Nick Ward has been working professionally within woodland management and arboriculture for over 30 years. His passion for trees and woodlands has led him down a varied career path, from forestry worker, climbing arborist, research tree climber to woodland manager, educator and consultant. As well as holding formal qualifications in Woodland management and arboriculture, he also holds qualifications for outdoor leadership and teaching and has also been teaching outdoor skills and environmental education for the last 25 years. Nick has a fun and relaxed approach to his teaching and is a great believer of experiential learning.
