"From the Delta to the Moors: How Folk-Walkers Crossed an Ocean and Found Home"
with Associate Professor Si Poole (School of Education, University of Chester)
What do a Mississippi bluesman, a British rambler, and a hobo on a freight train have in common? They’re all faces of the folk-walker—a wanderer who carried songs across the Atlantic and turned walking into a way of knowing the world.
This talk traces how American itinerant musicians (like Robert Johnson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott) met British rural traditions (from Ewan MacColl to Bert Jansch) to create a new kind of belonging: one rooted in land, movement, and shared voice.
With live performances of Ramblin’ Soldier, North Country Girl, Bees’ Wing, and Heartwood, we’ll explore how walking and singing stitch people to place—and why the land itself might be the most important voice of all to learn from.
