Security and Readiness for Environmental Advocacy Groups

In times where environmental advocacy faces increasing resistance from government and corporate powers around the world and even citizen opposition groups in our own communities that mobilize against progressive change, there may be many things making you and your fellow organizers feel more challenged and less safe when doing your work.

This webinar will be presented by the Holistic Readiness Center (HRC), a newly-formed project that supports progressive-sector funders and organizations as they face security threats that would hamper their ability to do transformative work.

The HRC intends to fill a critical gap in movement infrastructure in Canada where the right professionals, experts, resources, information, connections, and direct services can be mobilized and provided (quickly) to respond strategically to advocates' needs in crisis.

HRC defines security and safety threats as the entire range of physical, financial, digital, legal, reputational, and psychosocial outside forces, coming from government/corporate/opposition group actors, that would leave progressive groups and advocates with a feeling of compromised safety / security while doing their work.

‍Our Presenter

HRC Director Tom Liacas has gained over 25 years' worth of experience setting up networks to support progressive activists. Since 2020, he has focused on setting up organizations and knowledge-management systems for high-stakes activist projects under the guidance of global security experts. Prior to helping launch the Holistic Readiness Center, Tom founded the Climate Justice Organizing HUB, The Global Grassroots Support Network and led the Building Power Convenings project in 2024-2025.
