Leadership for Impact with Mikhael Bornstein: A Vision2030 Leadership Fundamentals Program

Most managers in the environmental sector were promoted because they were excellent at the work, not because anyone trained them to manage. The nonprofit sector invests roughly half of what the for-profit sector invests in developing its leaders, and most of that investment goes to the largest institutions: universities, hospitals and large national charities. Managers in small and mid-sized ENGOs, where much of the sector's work actually happens, are frequently handed a team and left to figure it out.

Leadership for Impact is a 10-month, cohort-based program built to close that gap. Twenty-five new managers from environmental organizations across Canada will spend the year building the skills the job actually requires: running one on-ones that are worth the time, setting goals with staff rather than for them, giving feedback that develops people, handling the conversation you have been putting off for months, building a team that functions, and leading through change from the middle of an organization. The first half covers management fundamentals; the second half turns to leadership. It is designed to fit around a working life, at about three hours a month.

WHAT THE PROGRAM INCLUDES

• Twenty bi-weekly modules: a 15-minute video, a reading of no more than 15 minutes, and a workplace exercise of no more than 30 minutes

• Ten monthly peer coaching sessions of 90 minutes, facilitated live and never recorded, so the conversation can be candid

• A three-hour live launch session and a three-hour closing celebration

• Two confidential one-to-one coaching sessions with Mikhael Bornstein

• A year-long online community of twenty-five peers facing the same challenges

• A certificate of completion

WHO IT IS FOR

Managers, supervisors and emerging leaders at Canadian environmental non-governmental organizations who have fewer than three years of management experience and limited or no formal management training. Participants need a team, a program or a set of colleagues they are responsible for, so that the learning has somewhere to land.

REGISTRATION

$250 per participant. Open to staff of Canadian environmental non-governmental organizations. Twenty-five places, first come first served: the first twenty-five eligible registrants who pay are enrolled. Because the value of the program depends on a stable group that builds trust over ten months, we ask that you register with your supervisor's support and a real intention to complete the year.

Our Presenter

Mikhael Bornstein is a speaker, facilitator and instructor specializing in nonprofit leadership and management. He delivers workshops and training for nonprofit leaders across Canada, with a consistent focus on practical tools that can be used in the workplace the same week they are taught.

Mikhael has more than twenty-five years of experience as a nonprofit leader, having worked across the arts, health, social service and education sectors. He teaches leadership and nonprofit management at George Brown College, Toronto Metropolitan University and Fleming College Toronto, and has designed and delivered customized leadership and management training for organizations including the David Suzuki Foundation and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. He is a regular presenter of leadership webinars for the Sustainability Network.

He is an AFP Master Trainer and a frequent speaker at conferences across North America. He holds a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor of Commerce from Toronto Metropolitan University, and he holds the CFRE designation.
