Bat walks at dusk in Heaton Mersey

Join us for a spooky evening stroll in Heaton Mersey to spot some bats as the sun sets using bat detectors!

This magical evening bat walk will give you the chance to hear and observe the bats using our special bat monitoring equipment. The insects will be out and the bats will be hunting. 

The walks are led by volunteers from Sustainable Living in the Heatons. Although the walk is free, we ask for a voluntary donation of £6 for adults over 18,  payable in cash on the night.

A new development in 2026 is a bespoke walk for those with limited mobility. This specific walk will take place on Sunday 6th September at 7.55pm. It will be on flat terrain and even surfaces and will also be accessible for wheelchair users. The starting point will be the Aurora car park off Gorsey Bank Road (SK3 0EF) on the south side of the River Mersey. We will use the Geoff Funnell bridge to observe the bats along the river, and there will be an option to extend the walk along the paved river walk.

All events, except the walk for those with limited mobility described above, will last just over an hour. We meet close to the junction of Craig Road and Vale Rd in Heaton Mersey, from there we visit two sites. The second site is on the banks of the River Mersey where we expect to see the river bats (Daubentons bats). Please note there are steps from the path to the seating area adjacent to the water.  Please wear appropriate shoes for uneven terrain.

The bat walks are led by volunteers from Sustainable Living in the Heatons, trained by ecologist Jeff Clarke, and with funding from the Stockport Hydro Environmental Challenge Fund to purchase the bat monitors.
