This is a mostly off-road route along the Fallowfield Loop, Ashton Canal and Daisy Nook Country Park. Return will be on a cycleway to Ashton, through the town onto the canal to pick up the outward route.

Visit an old industrial village between Oldham and Ashton U Lyne which is typical of our area. There was a cotton mill, coal mine, railway viaduct and ironworks there, plus workers’ houses, institute, school and church. As the mills and works closed in the ‘60’s the buildings were abandoned and many demolished. However, during the ‘70’s the Greater Manchester Council put in a restoration plan for the whole Medlock Valley, which included landscaping work, a ranger service and interpretation facilities. .

The Route: is good for riders of all skill levels who want a longish ride out of the city. It is mostly on gravel or tarmac cycle paths and roads. There are 2 short sections on main roads: to get to Station South from Heaton Moor and through Ashton town centre. Only 1 short steep hill out of Park Bridge up to the cycleway which then runs gradually down into Ashton. The disused canal towpath near Littlemoss is rough and narrow for about a mile which we’ll take slowly and recommend at least 28mm tyres. Electric bikes are welcome.

The Scenery: As we escape the town we enter the Medlock Valley and start to get views up to Harthead Pike and the Pennine hills. We pass through a lot of woodland and have canal scenery/architecture for part of our journey.

Bring: Please bring a roadworthy bike, a drink and a picnic lunch. There will be an opportunity for refreshments and toilets at Daisy Nook Country Park visitor centre at 7 miles. We’ll eat picnic lunch at Park Bridge where there are seats.

Weather: Please check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. We ride rain or shine.

Please note all attendees must bring their own roadworthy bike. Under 18s are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
