The Clawhammer Arpeggio Technique: the Galax Lick, the Full Clawhammer Roll, and Beyond
Mon Feb 24, 2025 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM EST

Description
Analogous to crosspicking on guitar or mandolin, in the clawhammer arpeggio we obtain additional notes by dragging the picking finger from string-to-string (think of it as a slow, controlled brush in which you stop for a given time interval on each successive string). We'll look at several useful applications of this technique, including the Galax lick, arpeggiated triplets, the full clawhammer roll, certain types of syncopation, and upwardly moving runs of notes. We’ll then apply all these techniques in a variety of traditional and contemporary contexts including arrangements by trad icons Kyle Creed, Fred Cockerham, Tom Ashley, Wade Ward, and Hobart Smith; and (of course) by Ken Perlman.
