There's a lot of misinformation about modal music these days in the old-time music scene (for one thing, the so-called Church Modes - Dorian, Mixolydian etc. - are only the beginning of the story).   Learn a practical, thoroughly no-nonsense approach to "modal" music, and how to approach modal tunes in your playing.
