Inactivism: Disability, Rest and Resistance

Inspired by Swansea University research on histories of disability activism and David Turner's Disability: A History of Resistance, join us for an afternoon of creative reflection on disability rights and what is still needed. This workshop is devised by Delphi Campbell and James Patrick Cox and facilitated by GS Artists and textiles artist, Menna Buss.
The creative arts are integral to the modern history of disability activism. The 1st International Day of Disabled Persons in 1993 was marked by a 'Party for our Rights', which highlighted demands for accessible transport and help with the cost of living through performance, song and creative activities.
Celebrating the ways disabled communities have fought for their rights in different times and places, this workshop offers the chance to contribute to a community banner through scrap appliqué, stamping and stitching. No prior experience is needed. All materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring scraps of non-woven cotton fabrics and your own small sewing kit if you prefer.
Those living with disabilities and chronic illness often find themselves bound to domestic spaces. We honour human persistence in creating from home, inspired by artists such as Frida Kahlo and Miss Hawtin (image).
Participants who can’t attend in person are invited to send in contributions of postcard-sized artworks made from home in advance. These will be displayed and included in the banner making. If you would like to participate in this way, please complete the booking link to receive a prepaid envelope.
