Wine School: Drink Better, Know More - We connect the dots between grape, place, and winemaking in a way that’s clear and useful so you can trust your palate, choose with confidence, and get more out of every bottle.
In the wine world, we talk a lot about regions that are rooted in tradition, but few places embody that idea as completely as Alsace. Throughout the region, it’s common to find families who have farmed the same vineyards for centuries, maintaining a direct connection between history, agriculture, and place. For this tasting, we’ll explore Alsace through two historic domaines, Domaine Camille Braun and Domaine Emile Beyer. The Beyer family has been making wine in Eguisheim since 1580, while records place the Braun family in Alsace as early as 1593. These are producers whose stories are deeply tied to the evolution of the region itself.
Situated along the French-German border, Alsace has changed national identity multiple times over the centuries, particularly during periods of conflict between France and Germany. That history still shapes the region today, from its architecture and cuisine to its grape varieties and wine culture. Combined with the protection of the Vosges Mountains, one of the driest climates in France, and an extraordinary diversity of soils, Alsace produces wines that are unlike anywhere else in the country.
While both Domaines are deeply rooted in tradition, they are also part of Alsace’s modern movement toward organic and biodynamic farming, reflecting a continued focus on vineyard health, sustainability, and expressing a strong sense of place. Tonight, Donn Danielson of Michael Corso Imports will taste us through 5 wines and help us gain a deeper understanding of why Alsace remains one of the most distinctive wine regions in the world.
