Friday Night Wine School, Slo Cro

Fri Jun 9, 2023 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM CDT Swirl, 70119

Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting!  Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 10 people per time slot.

Indigenous varieties, nonintervention winemaking, varied terroirs from seascapes to mountain slopes, vibrant wine cultures - Slovenia and Croatia are two of my favorite areas to drink from!  Our friends at Lirette Selections have an extensive portfolio of wines from both countries and we always love exposing all of you to new and interesting wines.

Slovenian and Croatian wines share some similarities due to their geographical proximity and historical connections. However, they also have distinct characteristics that make each country's wines unique.  Both have a long tradition of winemaking and possess diverse wine regions with varying climates, soils, and grape varieties. The countries are located in the same region, Central Europe, and share borders, which has led to some similarities in winemaking practices and influences.

Both Slovenia and Croatia have a rich diversity of indigenous grape varieties that are not widely grown in other parts of the world. These local grape varieties contribute to the distinct flavor profiles and aromas found in their wines. For example, Slovenia has grape varieties like Rebula, Refošk, and Žametna črnina, while Croatia is known for varieties like Graševina, Plavac Mali, Possip and others.  The specific terroir of each region as well as the winemaking traditions and cultural heritage of Slovenia and Croatia add another layer of uniqueness to their wines. Both countries have a long history of winemaking, often with generations of winemakers passing down their knowledge and techniques. The cultural significance placed on wine, local customs, and regional pride can shape the approach to winemaking and contribute to the distinct character of the wines.

We hope you'll join us as Margaret Swords from Lirette Selections walks us through the major regions and grape varieties of these two fascinating wine regions!
