Description
How important are patents for startups?
Protecting your business ideas is crucial but not always easy.
This presentation will provide a comprehensive introduction to patents and the patenting process, specifically within the European context. We will explore the fundamentals of patent rights and discussing the rights conferred upon patent holders. Understanding what can and cannot be patented is crucial, so we’ll review the criteria for patentability, distinguishing between patentable and non-patentable inventions. The session will delve into the European Patent Convention (EPC) and outline the procedural steps involved in filing and obtaining a patent in Europe. Additionally, we will cover the international patent application process, focusing on the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and explain the concept of priority rights, a critical aspect of patent filings across jurisdictions. Finally, we will highlight the importance of conducting thorough patent searches to assess prior art and increase the chances of a successful patent application. This overview will equip attendees with a foundational understanding of the patent landscape in Europe and internationally, with practical insights into securing patent protection.
