Program Description:
In Paintings Composed, Symphony847 walks through a musical picture gallery. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s haunting painting, unfolds in brooding waves and shadowy motifs. Florida-based composer Stella Sung responds to the warm, evocative imagery of Norman Rockwell in Rockwell Reflections, nostalgic portraits of American life. The concert concludes with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, originally written for piano and later orchestrated with stunning brilliance by Maurice Ravel, this work shows off the power and virtuosity of Symphony847. Inspired by the works of Victor Hartmann, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a musical perusal of a gallery of Hartmann’s works.
