Gwrych Castle, Tan-yr-Ogo Lodge

Enjoy an owner-led guided tour of Tan-yr-Ogo Lodge, the ceremonial entrance to Gwrych Castle, plus a visit to Lady Emily's Tower and Cefn-yr-Ogof Caves (optional depending on accessibility requirements).

Tan-yr-Ogo Lodge is a monumental gate lodge, forming courtyards and an elaborate complex of structures. The rooms are in a recently refurbished elevated section of the complex providing a mini castle experience. The battlements contain four recessed sandstone inscription tablets. These commemorate various historical events which have taken place on this important strategic site over the past thousand years:

1. the battle between Harold II and Griffith ap Llewelyn
2. the routing of Hugh Lupus on his way to invade Anglesey
3. the repulsion of Henry II by Owain Gwynedd
4. the betrayal of Richard II by Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, as immortalised in Shakespeare's history play.

The lodge has been sympathetically restored and contains the castle's private art collection.

Tickets £30 including a cream tea/coffee with cakes, biscuits and sandwiches.

• Yesterday I went to Gwrych Castle with friends. We had a lovely day, Mark was very informative and we spent the rest of the day looking at the castle and the work being done to restore it. All the volunteers working there stopped to answer our questions and give us more history of the castle. We had expected to spend the rest of the day at a nearby NT house but we spent it at the castle thoroughly enjoying the views and talking to the staff who were happy to stop what they were doing and tell us what they were trying to restore and achieve.
