Online, Zoom
Description
Each year, we invite anyone from around the world to join our Taiwan/Ireland Poetry Translation Competition. In this competition, we explore the range of languages and traditions found in Taiwan, and discover how these can be linked to the poetry tradition of Ireland.
This year's poem is 莎拉茅群訪談記事 [Notes on interviews with the Slamaw] by 黃璽 (Temu Suyan):
You can view our three winners' translations of the poem into English, here.
It is written in the Mandarin language about the experiences of the 莎拉茅 (Slamaw) people, a subgroup of the Atayal tribe from the Dajia River Basin. The Slamaw are one of the indigenous peoples of the island who traditionally speak an Austronesian language. You can hear the poet speak about the inspiration for this poem in this video:

In this event, the winning entrants will come together to discuss their experiences of translating the poem, the challenges they overcame along the way, and the effects created by their translations as functioning poems in English. The event is online, free, and open to all.
