Masterclass: Building a Network in the Literary Translation Community

How and where do translators connect with each other? What are translator communities like? What are the benefits of networking with fellow translators?

This interactive Masterclass explores the many ways translators can build professional connections and strengthen their visibility, with a focus on the literary translation industry. We will examine existing networking opportunities, from local and international translator associations to online communities and collaborative projects. Participants will also be invited to share their own experiences and insights.

Beyond making connections, we will consider how networking can enhance professional opportunities, from securing commissions to positioning oneself in a competitive field. Whether you're looking to expand your network, raise your profile, or simply meet like-minded colleagues, this session offers a valuable opportunity to engage with fellow translators in a welcoming and supportive environment.

This masterclass is led by Dr Motoko Akashi

Dr Motoko Akashi is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin. She holds a PhD in Literary Translation from the University of East Anglia, with expertise in translator visibility and celebrity translators. In addition to her academic work, she has worked as a freelance translator and interpreter and serves as the Japanese agent for Literature Ireland. She collaborates closely with translators and publishers in Japan, actively promoting the translation and publication of contemporary Irish literature.

What to expect

Our masterclasses are run by leading researchers and practitioners in the field. They are friendly, informal events which attract people from a wide range of backgrounds, including students and recent graduates, emerging and established practicing translators, researchers, and members of the public with an interest in translation. Everyone is welcome.

The event fee includes a selection of light food options, made available for you during the masterclass. 

How to prepare

Participants are encouraged to spend some time researching translator communities and potential networking opportunities within their language pairs before the session. You are welcome to bring notes for discussion.
