Translation Workshop: Marina Carr’s By the Bog of Cats in Spanish

What challenges face a translator working on dramatic texts into Spanish? This translation workshop will address this question. It will focus on Marina Carr’s play By the Bog of Cats (1998) (scene one of act one). This text provides an excellent example to work on the difficulties that a dramatic text poses for a translator and how we should be aware of the performative aspects of these kinds of texts. Plays are written for actors on stage and translators ideally hear their voices. In this case we do not have this luxury though. So our workshop is an experimental collaborative translation process.

Eulalia Piñero Gil is Full Professor of American literature and gender studies of the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid, Spain. She has served as president of the Spanish Association for American Studies (SAAS) and has also been a member of the Board of the European Association for American Studies (EAAS). She has published extensively on the American Renaissance, women’s literature, gender and translation, Female Gothic, American and Canadian poetry, and comparative literature. She has translated and edited works by American writers such as Kate Chopin, Gertrude Stein, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, John Dos Passos and Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
